Your smile is the first thing that people notice about you, and hence, it’s important to keep them healthy and bright. Do you know, what is the best way to keep your teeth and mouth healthy? It is no secret that religiously following good oral hygiene habits is vital to protecting the health of your smile. Good oral hygiene involves brushing and flossing your teeth daily, along with several other practices to maintain oral health. Good oral hygiene can help you avoid tooth decay, cavities, and dental infection. Read on to know more about how to effectively practice good oral hygiene.

Tips for maintaining good oral hygiene habits

  • Brush your teeth regularly

To help keep your mouth clean and healthy, brush your teeth at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste. Brushing before you go to bed is especially important because plaque can build up in your mouth while you sleep.

  • Floss daily

Flossing daily will help remove food particles and plaque from between teeth and the gum line. Flossing also helps remove bacteria and germs that cause tooth decay and gum disease.

While brushing should take place twice a day, flossing should be done once a day, preferably at night before bed. That way, the debris and bacteria are removed from the mouth.

  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash

Besides regular brushing and flossing, use an antibacterial mouthwash to kill the bacteria present in the mouth and to keep the breath fresh.

  • Eat a healthy diet

It is important to reduce the intake of sugary and acidic foods to upkeep your oral health. Also, ensure that you consume a healthy diet rich in nutrients needed for your oral and overall health.

  • Avoid tobacco and alcohol

If you are a smoker, quitting is the best thing you can do for your oral health. Not only does smoking increase your risk for gum disease and oral cancer, but it also stains your teeth. If you want to keep your teeth white, avoid smoking.

Alcohol contains chemicals that cause dry mouth, which can contribute to halitosis. So, avoid the use of tobacco and alcohol.

  • Regular dental visits

Regular dental visits are one of the important steps needed to maintain good oral health. During your dental visits, the dentist will examine your teeth and look for signs of cavities, gingivitis, and other common oral health concerns. At each visit, the dentist will also clean your teeth and take X-rays to check for any signs of tooth decay, gum disease, or other dental issues.
